So, you’ve decided to give affiliate marketing a go. Good choice! But now comes the big question: What on earth am I going to talk about?
That’s where picking a niche comes in. A niche is just a fancy way of saying “the topic you’ll focus on.” And trust me, the more specific you get, the easier your life becomes.
Why You Need a Niche (a.k.a. Why You Can’t Sell Everything Under the Sun)
Think of it like this: If you go to a buffet, you get overwhelmed because there’s shrimp, pizza, salad, and Jell-O, and somehow you’re supposed to pile it all on one plate. That’s what happens if you try to promote everything. You end up with a big, confusing mess that nobody wants to follow.
But if you stick to one main dish — say, “healthy recipes for women over 60” — suddenly your audience knows exactly what they’re getting from you. And they’ll keep coming back for seconds.
Start With What You Actually Enjoy

Here’s the golden rule: if you don’t enjoy it, you won’t stick with it. Period.
- Love gardening? Great — maybe “container gardening for small patios.”
- Obsessed with travel? Try “budget travel tips for retirees.”
- Can’t stop talking about health and wellness? How about “simple fitness and nutrition after 60.”
If you’re rolling your eyes at your own topic after two weeks, it’s the wrong niche. Pick something that makes you light up — or at least keeps you awake without another cup of coffee.

Use Your Life Experience (It’s Your Secret Weapon)
Here’s where being over 60 gives you a serious edge. You’ve got stories, wisdom, and a whole lot of “been there, done that” credibility. Younger bloggers may have energy, but you’ve got experience.
- Former teacher? Start a niche helping parents homeschool.
- Retired nurse? Health advice for seniors (without all the confusing jargon).
- Lifelong crafter? A DIY blog with affiliate links to supplies.
You’ve lived it — now you can share it, and people will trust you more because you’ve walked the walk.
Check If People Care
It’s one thing to love collecting ceramic frogs, but does anyone else? Before you go all-in, do a quick reality check:
- Google Trends: Type in your topic and see if it’s growing or flatlining.
- Facebook groups: Are people talking about it?
- Amazon: Are there products in your niche people are buying?
If the only people searching are you and your neighbor Gladys, maybe broaden it a little.
Niche Down (But Not Too Much)
Being specific is good — “fitness for retirees” is better than just “fitness.” But don’t niche down so far you’ve only got five potential readers in the world.
For example:
- ✅ Good: “Gardening for small spaces.”
- ❌ Too narrow: “Gardening for left-handed retirees who only plant herbs on Wednesdays.”
Balance, my friend. Balance.
Final Word
Picking a niche doesn’t have to be stressful. Start with what you love, use your experience, make sure people care, and niche down just enough. Think of it as choosing a new hobby — except this hobby has the potential to pay you back.
And remember: you’re not too old to start. In fact, your age is your advantage. The stories you’ve lived, the skills you’ve gained, and the passions you’ve carried — those are exactly what make your voice stand out online.
So, grab a pen, jot down your favorite topics, and ask yourself: Which one of these could I happily talk about until my friends beg me to change the subject?
That’s your niche.
